How Maryland Dispensaries Work

Every licensed dispensary in Maryland serves both medical and recreational customers. There are no rec-only or medical-only shops. When you walk in, you will be asked whether you are purchasing as a recreational customer (21+ ID required, 12% tax) or a medical patient (medical card required, tax-exempt).

Key things to know before your first visit:

  • Online ordering: Most dispensaries use Dutchie, Weedmaps, or Leafly for online menus and pre-orders. Browse the menu, add items to your cart, and pick up in-store or curbside.
  • Curbside pickup: Available at most locations. Order online, drive to the dispensary, park in the designated spot, show your ID, and receive your order at your car.
  • Walk-ins welcome: No appointment needed at any Maryland dispensary. Expect 10–20 minute waits at popular locations on weekends.
  • Medical delivery: Statewide delivery is available for medical patients through select dispensaries.
  • Hours: Legal operating hours are 8am–10pm. Most dispensaries operate 9am–9pm.
  • Payment: Cash preferred everywhere. Debit accepted at many locations ($3–5 surcharge). Credit cards not accepted.

Baltimore & Surrounding Area

Baltimore is Maryland’s cannabis epicenter with 47 dispensary locations — the densest concentration in the state. From the flagship CULTA in Federal Hill to GreenLabs in Fells Point to the late-night ReLeaf on Cathedral Street, Baltimore offers more variety, competition, and deals than anywhere else in the mid-Atlantic.

Key neighborhoods: Federal Hill, Fells Point, Hampden, Canton, Pikesville, Reisterstown

Highlights: CULTA (house strains + multi-brand), Cookies Baltimore, GreenLabs (Baltimore Sun Reader’s Choice), Health For Life (Leafly Best Overall)

DC Suburbs: Montgomery & Prince George’s Counties

Montgomery County has 18 dispensaries, making it the second most dispensary-dense area in the state. Prince George’s County adds several more, and together these two counties serve as the primary cannabis destination for DC residents and Northern Virginia commuters.

Key areas: Rockville, Silver Spring, Bethesda, Germantown, Capitol Heights, Brandywine, Oxon Hill

Highlights: Potomac Holistics (Maryland’s first dispensary, Dec 2017), HerbaFi (steps from Silver Spring Metro), Mary & Main (first Black-owned + women-owned in the DMV)

Annapolis, Eastern Shore & Western Maryland

Beyond the Baltimore–DC corridor, Maryland’s dispensary coverage extends to the Chesapeake Bay, the Eastern Shore beaches, Frederick’s 11 dispensaries, and the mountains of Western Maryland. Coverage is thinner here, but competition is growing and some of the state’s best dispensary experiences are outside the metro areas.

Key areas: Annapolis, Ocean City, Frederick, Salisbury, Columbia, Cumberland, Hagerstown, Solomons, Southern Maryland

Highlights: Gold Leaf (luxury + statewide EV delivery), Positive Energy (Ocean City drive-thru), Remedy Columbia (largest MD dispensary), Grow West (mountain cannabis)

First-Timer Tip

If this is your first dispensary visit, order online first. Browse the menu on Dutchie or Weedmaps, read strain descriptions, check prices with tax, and place a pickup order. When you arrive, show your ID, pay, and go. It removes the pressure of choosing on the spot.
