Maryland Munchies: Food & Outdoors

Steamed crabs with Old Bay, charcoal-grilled pit beef on a Kaiser roll, snowballs in every flavor, and then the Chesapeake Bay at sunset. Maryland’s food and outdoor culture is some of the best in the mid-Atlantic — and it pairs remarkably well with a dispensary stop.

The Maryland Crab Feast

This is the quintessential Maryland experience. Steamed blue crabs seasoned with Old Bay, dumped onto a newspaper-covered table, cracked open with wooden mallets. It’s messy, communal, and absolutely worth building your day around.

  • L.P. Steamers (Locust Point, Baltimore) — Rooftop deck overlooking the harbor, legendary steamed crabs, cash-only tradition
  • Conrad’s Seafood (multiple locations) — Consistent quality, generous portions, family-friendly atmosphere
  • Nick’s Fish House (South Baltimore) — Waterfront location, outdoor seating, crabs and craft beer

Tip: Crab season runs roughly May through November, with peak availability June through September. Off-season crabs are often imported and more expensive. Visit during summer for the authentic experience.

Pit Beef & Baltimore’s Food Scene

Baltimore pit beef is the city’s signature street food — top round beef charcoal-grilled, sliced thin, piled on a Kaiser roll with Tiger Sauce (a horseradish-mayo blend) and raw onion. It’s the perfect high-appetite food.

  • Chaps Pit Beef (Pulaski Highway) — The standard-bearer. Featured on every food show that’s visited Baltimore. Open late, cash-preferred, unassuming exterior, life-changing sandwiches
  • Land of Kush (Baltimore) — Vegan soul food that rivals any meat-based establishment. Collard greens, mac and cheese, BBQ “ribs” — all plant-based, all outstanding
  • Berger Cookies — A Baltimore institution since 1835. Shortbread cookies topped with a thick layer of chocolate fudge. Available at grocery stores and bakeries across the city. The ultimate post-session snack
Baltimore Snowballs

Not a snow cone — a snowball. Shaved ice (fine as powder) with flavored syrup, often topped with marshmallow. A Baltimore summer tradition with stands on seemingly every corner from May through September. Egg custard and skylite are classic Maryland flavors. Perfect for a hot afternoon.

Chesapeake Bay & Water Activities

The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States and the centerpiece of Maryland’s outdoor identity. The combination of water access, gentle terrain, and temperate climate makes Maryland an excellent destination for outdoor activities — especially if you’ve visited a dispensary first.

  • Kayaking & paddleboarding — Dozens of launch points along the Chesapeake. Calm waters in the protected coves of the Eastern Shore. Rental outfits in Annapolis, St. Michaels, and Kent Island
  • Crabbing from public piers — Free or low-cost crabbing from public piers across the state. Bring a chicken neck on a string and a net. Kids love it. Adults love it more after a gummy
  • Sailing — Annapolis is the “Sailing Capital of the United States.” Charter boats, sunset cruises, and sailing schools. Consume before boarding (not during — boating under the influence is illegal)

Important: Consume cannabis before water activities, not during. Boating under the influence is a criminal offense in Maryland. Edibles taken 1–2 hours before a kayak trip or beach afternoon are the responsible approach.

Hiking & Nature

Maryland stretches from the Appalachian Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean, offering surprising variety for a small state:

  • Catoctin Mountain Park — Western Maryland hiking through forests and rock outcroppings. Cunningham Falls (the state’s largest cascading waterfall) is a 45-minute hike from the trailhead. Note: the park includes federal land (Camp David is here) — cannabis is prohibited on federal property
  • C&O Canal Towpath — 184.5 miles of flat, shaded trail along the Potomac River from Georgetown to Cumberland. Perfect for cycling or leisurely walks. The section from Great Falls to Harpers Ferry is particularly scenic
  • Patapsco Valley State Park — 200+ miles of trails through river valleys just outside Baltimore. The Cascade Falls trail is an easy 2-mile loop that rewards you with a waterfall
  • Assateague Island — Wild ponies, pristine beaches, and dune trails on the Eastern Shore. Camping available. A full-day trip from Baltimore or DC
Cannabis-Friendly Lodging

Fingerboard Farm Lodge in Ijamsville offers a 6-bedroom cannabis-friendly property with a dispensary on the premises. It is one of the few Maryland accommodations that explicitly welcomes cannabis use. For other options, look for Airbnb and VRBO rentals that permit smoking on outdoor patios or balconies — always confirm with the host before booking.

Pairing Cannabis with Maryland Experiences

The key to a great cannabis-enhanced Maryland trip is planning consumption around your activities, not the other way around:

  • Morning: Visit a dispensary. Browse the menu online first, bring cash, and know what you want
  • Afternoon: Consume privately at your accommodation, then head out for crabs, a hike, or the waterfront. Edibles with a 1–2 hour onset are ideal for timing
  • Evening: Baltimore’s food scene, Inner Harbor, Fells Point, or a quiet evening on the Chesapeake. Low-dose edibles (2.5–5mg) for social settings
  • Remember: Private property only. No driving under the influence. No crossing state lines. Consume what you buy in Maryland
